Three vital energies determine our life and body. Ojas relates to Kapha, to Earth and Water, stabilizes us and keeps us in the flow. Teja is Pitta, Agni, the fire in our body to digest. Further, it is the intelligence of our body. Prana is the air we breathe and relates to Vata. It resides in the lungs and is responsible for our kinetic energy.
Ojas enter our body at conception and leave at our departure from this life. The Vedas say that without Ojas we cease to exist. It is the purest substance in the universe and omnipresent in human beings. Maintaining healthy Ojas in our system keeps balance and energy flows free, avoids stagnation in the channels, and resists decay and disease. Ojas helps to achieve higher states of consciousness, purity of thoughts, perfect health, positive feelings, love, joy, strong immunity, longevity, intelligence, creativity, memory and bliss.
Ayurveda identifies 2 types of Ojas:
- Para Ojas resides in the heart where it maintains its activity.
- Aparaojas originates in the heart and moves around in the body nourishing the tissues and maintaining life
A person with a healthy amount of Ojas has an allover healthy glow. They are patient, compassionate, within themself, and rarely get sick.
- Strong immune system
- Glowing skin
- Peaceful energy
- Digest food easily
- Rarely become ill
- Pleasant body smell
- Energized through the day
- Feeling rested
Disturbed Ojas influence most of our living conditions. However, if Ojas increases too quickly, it can turn into Ama (toxins), which can lead to various physical problems. Further, high sexual activities can reduce Ojas.
- Physical trauma
- Emotional trauma
- Poor sleep habits
- Chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, cancer, TB, and ulcerative colitis
- Chronic pain
- High Vata in the system
- Resistance to reality
- Excessive orgasms
How to Balance Ojas
We can raise our Ojas on many levels. Meditation, hobbies, music, massages, or anything that makes us happy support the vitality of the body. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits, high-fibre and antioxidant food, and Ojas-increasing diet such as ginger, dates, almonds, ghee, coconuts support the immune system. It is important to learn to accept reality and everything as it is and to have a positive outlook on life unfolding.
